It’s that time where I get to update you all on what’s been happening across Brecon and Radnorshire. There’s been a lot of change in Cardiff Bay since I last wrote to you all, with Vaughan Gething taking over as the new First Minister of Wales. Unfortunately, I’m not expecting to see any real change as his track record gives me little hope for optimism.
On a more personal note, I am delighted to have been appointed as the new Shadow Minister for Rural Affairs in the latest reshuffle. With my agricultural background, I am honoured to have the chance to represent the industry I love. Whether it’s the Sustainable Farming Scheme or the threat of Bovine TB, our industry is facing challenges on a scale never seen before. I stand ready to fight everyone’s corner and be that strong voice for the rural businesses across Wales.
On another note, Green GEN Cymru’s have held their latest round of consultations on their proposed 60-mile long pylon route which cuts through the heat of mid-Wales. Ever since the plans were announced, I have been inundated with emails from people who are all very concerned that their livelihoods are being put at risk. Should these plans get the green light, make no mistake that the very fabric of countryside will be irreparably damaged – harming communities at a time where they need support the most.
As well as this, rural Wales is yet again facing more cuts in our rail services – with Transport for Wales recently announcing plans to cut the amount of services on the Heart of Wales line. I am deeply concerned with this due to the number of people who will be adversely affected by these changes. Mid-Wales is too often neglected by the Welsh Government – I raised this with the Transport Secretary in the chamber and will continue to do so over the coming months.
Ending on a lighter note, I’m looking forward to the Joey’s Warrior Darts Event up the golf club on the 11th of May and I hope to see many of you there supporting a great cause and I’m sure it will be a good day had by all
