The start of 2023 has been a busy time. I have enjoyed meeting many of you to discuss local issues including the Active Travel Scheme, apprenticeships and the rising cost of energy bills.
Firstly, I want to acknowledge how deeply saddened I am that Llanbedr School is to close. I want to pay tribute to the incredible campaigners who fought to keep the school open. I have never supported the proposed school closures and I fought my own party on this. As I write, I have also heard that Cradoc Primary have sadly also lost their judicial review and my thoughts are with those involved in the campaign to save and rebuild Cradoc School.
I deeply regret the way in which the new political leaders of the local authority have handled this issue. Parents should never have been sold false hope with the election promise that schools would be saved. The Liberal Democrats have misled the community and should be ashamed.
It is vital that every household gets the necessary support to ensure that their energy bills are manageable and that they can stay warm. I know many of you have been glad that the UK Government have stepped forward and provided financial assistant via the £400 Energy Support Scheme, and the £200 Alternative Payment Scheme for those who live in properties off the national grid and in Park Homes.
I am very glad that those properties are now receiving their £200 after much campaigning by myself and colleagues to ensure that the figure proposed was reflective of the prices you are dealing with for LPG oil and other fuels. Whilst this is to be welcomed the importance of protecting park home residents from similar bill prices is equally important and a battle, I am continuing in Westminster to ensure that you receive these payments promptly.
It was a real delight to visit Kiernan Steele in Llandrindod Wells in January. Employing local people and apprentices has become a critical part of its operation, and something they are committed to continuing. I am delighted to be returning to see them with the Minister for Skills Guy Oppenham at some point in the Spring to showcase the fantastic work they are doing.
