This summer saw Brecon and Radnorshire Conservative Association back out supporting communities, businesses, and our agriculture sector, by attending local shows throughout the constituency. In addition to the World-famous Royal Welsh Show, we had our popular Conservative stand at Brecon, Lower Chapel, Boughrood and Llyswen, Knighton, and Sennybridge shows. It was super to be back out supporting these important events, talking with residents, businesses, and charities, and we were thrilled to be joined by Fay Jones MP, James Evans MS, and our Party Chairman Andrew Stephenson.
Popular topics discussed on our stand ranged from broken election promises made by the Welsh Liberal Democrats regarding local primary school closures, and Welsh Labour Government’s Tourism Tax proposals, to their questionable plans for more members in the Senedd, and the controversial purchase of Gilestone Farm, in Talybont on Usk.
We ran polls on our stand, asking visitors to share their opinions about these issues, with all returning almost unanimous results. It is clear Brecon and Radnorshire residents want healthcare provision fit for everyone, with investment in more nurses and reduced waiting lists, rather than more Senedd members, and vanity projects in Cardiff Bay. Residents also want elected Liberal Democrat County Councillors to stick to promises made during election campaigns, particularly around the provision of primary school education, and low Council Tax.
Many people who visited our stand had huge concerns about Welsh Labour’s proposal to introduce a Tourism Tax, with fears about job losses and business closures throughout Brecon and Radnorshire. Our essential tourism sector has suffered badly recently, it is therefore imperative we attract more visitors to Wales, immediately. Bordering England, which will remain a Tourism Tax free country, our businesses have an obvious fear of appearing less attractive to tourists. The extra expense of a Tourism Tax will make Wales more expensive to visit, keeping tourists away.
As summer ends we look forward to meeting more residents at other events throughout the year, talking about matters important to everyone, and finding ways to improve the lives of all constituents.
