Powys County Council met this week to debate the council tax for the next year. The Independent led coalition sadly agreed to increase council tax by 3.39%. Last week Cllr Iain Mcintosh made a request to set council tax at 0% for this year, an amendment was passed but it didn’t receive enough backing.
Powys received an extra £18.6m settlement this year from the Welsh Government, for once much higher than previous years but we still remain lower down the tables compared to other councils funding. This sum isn’t guaranteed again, however we finally have a voice in the Senedd not someone propping up the Labour Party.
Powys cannot keep increasing Council Tax, instead they need to look at ways of cuttings waste and saving money, ensuring all our services deliver good value for money. Each and every Brecon & Radnorshire Conservative candidate elected to stand in the May elections will stand and fight against such high rises whilst addressing all the areas within the authority where changes can be made, likewise they will support James Evans MS & Fay Jones MP fighting the Welsh Government for our share of what we deserve. Time and time again we are forgotten by the Government in Cardiff Bay.
