Since we last wrote news events have focussed on the horrific events in Ukraine. The United Kingdom stands firm in its commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty. The reaction from communities across Brecon and Radnorshire, donating supplies to local drop off points raising massive sums funding, has been incredible. What remains clear is compassion needs to be at the heart of what we do and helping Ukrainian refugees must be done with as much speed as possible. If you are prepared to consider taking in a refugee please visit the Government website https://homesforukraine.campaign.gov.uk/
We remain incredibly disappointed with Powys County Councils decision to proceed with School closures across Brecon and Radnorshire. We acknowledge that Powys County Council are under severe financial restraints due to underfunding from the Welsh Labour Government, and that difficult choices have to be made, but it shouldn’t be our schools paying the price. The School Organisation Code introduced in 2018 to protect small rural schools, states everything that can be done to ensure a school is kept open before consulting on closure - should be investigated. The policy offers our rural schools no protection. We offer our full support to the those affected by these decisions and the next steps they take.
The cost of living is a huge concern for us both. National problems often hit rural communities far harder. Rural businesses are about to embark on some difficult months ahead and our homes are going to have to make some changes.
With Easter approaching we will both be offering local surgeries. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can help in anyway.
