Fay Jones MP, James Evans MS and fellow Welsh Conservatives have called for an enquiry into the Grange Hospital following a critical report from Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW).
Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) said urgent improvements are needed at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department amid concerns patients are not consistently receiving an acceptable standard of care.
Welsh Conservatives have called for a full public inquiry to drive forward timely improvements. The Grange has come under heavy criticism since it opened on 17 November 2020 – with a catalogue of incidents shining a spotlight on healthcare failings.
Ms Jones said
“Welsh Conservative colleagues have rightly expressed their concerns and called for action for months and it is time the Welsh Government listened.Sadly, since the Grange opened we have heard of issues concerning hand-over problems and staffing fears. For patients from South Powys, this is incredibly worrying.
Frequently forgotten in reports about the Grange is that the Cwmbran-based hospital also covers Accident and Emergency treatment for residents of south Powys. There is no Accident and Emergency Department in Powys meaning patients living in Brecon and Radnorshire must travel to the Grange, Prince Charles in Merthyr, or Wye Valley Trust in Hereford to be treated.
We were all assured that the downgrading of Nevill Hall Hospital would not negate the quality of the care they receive. People in Powys have once again been let down by the Welsh Labour Government”
James Evans MS continued
"The Welsh government need to be held accountable for the performance of the Grange. There is a clear need for a public inquiry into what’s been happening at the Grange hospital, The HIW report is deeply concerning and shows that there are huge problems. It is time for accountability for those who run the health service including Labour Ministers in Cardiff Bay.
For the good of staff and patients alike, we need an inquiry now.”
