We are coming to the end of a very busy year and like many of you, I have been reflecting on the last twelve months.
Russia’s unjust invasion of Ukraine has caused widespread chaos globally. We are not alone in navigating the consequences of this, and although it has been a challenge we are taking steps now to ensure that we will not be in this position again.
In November this year I was humbled to meet Ukrainians and host families in Brecon and Radnorshire. Moving to another country can be unsettling, and under these circumstances especially it is vital that we do all we can to make their stay as comfortable as possible. We discussed the importance of their education qualifications being recognised and the necessity of free use of public transport, which rightly has been extended. I wish them a very warm welcome and thank everyone who has made their stay here so very comfortable.
The energy crisis has dominated headlines and understandably has been a cause of concern for us all. I have been tirelessly campaigning to ensure rural areas, like Brecon and Radnorshire, are not forgotten and I was pleased to host a debate in Parliament on the importance of upping energy payments for off grid homes. This was successful and the Government announced it was doubling the payment to £200. There is no single register of these homes, and the process is quite complex. While vital this money is delivered as soon as possible, we must ensure that everyone receives the support they need and no one is missed out.
With the first ‘normal’ Christmas in three years ahead of us, I hope you have a wonderful time. All the very best for 2023.
