In a bold and visionary move, Councillor Iain McIntosh presented a crucial motion to Powys County Council, highlighting the indispensable role of the agricultural sector in the local economy and community. This motion sought to ensure the sustainability and prosperity of farming in Powys, recognising the vital contributions of our farmers and the importance of engaging with Young Farmers' Clubs (YFCs).
Key Points of the Motion:
Recognition of the Agricultural Sector: The motion emphasises that agriculture is the cornerstone of Powys's economy and cultural heritage. It acknowledges the significant employment opportunities it provides and its role in fostering community connections and local markets.
Support for Young Farmers' Clubs: Councillor McIntosh stresses the necessity of collaborating with YFCs to secure the future of farming in Powys. These clubs are essential for nurturing the next generation of farmers, providing education, support, and pathways for careers in agriculture.
Promotion of Local Produce: The motion calls for Powys County Council to champion the produce of Powys farmers, particularly red meat, recognising its nutritional benefits and the high-quality efforts of local farmers.
Sustainability and Innovation: It highlights the importance of promoting sustainable farming practices and encouraging diversification to meet environmental targets. The motion also advocates for additional funding and resources to support these initiatives.
Encouraging Local Shopping: The Council is urged to promote local shopping, reducing food miles and supporting the local economy through conscious consumer choices.
Youth Engagement: The motion seeks to promote agriculture as a desirable career for young people in Powys and to involve YFCs in policy-making processes to ensure their insights are considered in future strategies.
Follow-Up and Accountability: The motion includes a resolution for the Cabinet to update the Council within four months on the actions taken to implement these measures, ensuring transparency and accountability.
During the debate, Liberal Democrats made false and misleading claims about the level of Council funding for YFCs and the current work with farmers. They also expressed confusion over the meaning of "working in partnership with agriculture." In a disappointing turn of events, Cllr Richard Church (LibDem) proposed ignoring the motion, seconded by Cllr Jackie Charlton (LibDem). A vote followed, and 31 members agreed to dismiss the motion.
Councillor Iain McIntosh expressed his dismay at this outcome, stating, "This is one of the worst examples of how the Liberal Democrats have no care or concern whatsoever for our farmers, YFCs, and the agriculture sector. They should all hang their heads in shame."
The proposed motion by Councillor McIntosh, seconded by Councillor Les George, represented a strategic and heartfelt commitment to preserving and invigorating the agricultural sector in Powys. It is a call to action to support our farmers, foster young talent, and ensure the long-term sustainability of our rural communities.
