A motion to stop the closure of Cradoc primary school has been heavily defeated by Powys County Council despite assurances during the Liberal Democrat Council election campaign that schools like Cradoc would “be brought back from the brink of closure and their future secured”
Cllr Pete Roberts: said during the meeting “The problem with this motion is it asks that the school is subject to any closure for five years”
“That means we can’t federate it or put it into a cluster arrangement”
This was never mentioned during their campaign.
Their campaign around Cradoc primary school, by a video heavily shared on social media instead said “To save and rebuild a school that matters so much to us all - vote for a political party that recognises the importance of rural schools just like Cradoc, that believes in the future of rural communities and has the means to deliver it.”
The fight to keep Cradoc, Llanfihangel Rhydithon, and Llanbedr schools open saw Liberal Democrat and Labour candidates give unequivocal commitments to protect the three schools and keep them open. Comments made by candidates from both parties in the press, on election leaflets, on social media, and on the doorstep, led members of the public to believe that if they voted for Liberal Democrat candidates, or Labour candidates, Cradoc, Llanfihangel Rhydithon and Llanbedr schools would be protected from closure. Candidates even joined campaign walks to block the proposed closures.
Llanbedr and Llanfihangel Schools will remain open for year, giving parents false hope when all parents can do is find alternate schools.
Cllr Mcintosh, councillor for Yscir with Honddu Isaf and Llanddew ward has vowed to not give up and encourages local constituents to write to their local councillor with their objections.
