It has been announced that Llanbedr Church in Wales School will close later this year.
Despite assurances campaigning on doorsteps and on leaflets by Liberal Democrat candidates, Councillors and the Welsh Lib Dem Leader Jane Dodds, to stop rural school closures during last years election campaign, Powys County Council’s Liberal Democrat/Labour cabinet have voted unanimously to close Llanbedr Church in Wales school
The Liberal Democrat-run Powys County Council finalised the decision at a Cabinet meeting this week.
James said:
“It’s bitterly disappointing to see the closure of another rural school by this Council. Llanbedr has played a crucial role in the community, and this simply isn’t fair on the children who attend the school.
People will rightly be questioning why the Lib Dems previously committed to halting school closures but are now doing everything they can to close rural schools.”
Fay Jones said:
"I am deeply saddened that Llanbedr School is to close. I want to pay tribute to the incredible campaigners who fought to keep the school open. My office is ready to help anyone who needs support in finding a new school. I have never supported Llanbedr’s closure and James & I fought our own party on this.
I deeply regret the way in which the new political leaders of the local authority have handled this issue. Parents should never have been sold false hope with the election promise that the school would be saved. The Liberal Democrats have misled the community should be ashamed"
