It has been confirmed that Llanfihangel Rhydithon CP School, known as Dolau, is going to be shut by Powys County Council.
James Evans MS and Fay Jones MP have consistently campaigned against the closure of the school. During a visit to the Senedd by Dolau pupils and teachers in October this year, the school thanked Evans for his continued support.
In November last year, Welsh Liberal Democrat leader Jane Dodds MS said, “if the Welsh Liberal Democrats were to take control of Powys Council next year, we would halt all rural school closures.”
James Evans said:
“It's a disgrace that Dolau School is going to be shut down by the Liberal Democrat-run Powys Council. I had the pleasure of welcoming Dolau pupils and teachers to the Senedd earlier this year - it's a huge slap in the face that their school is being closed. Our rural communities desperately need schools like Llanfihangel Rhydithon - they play a huge role in the wellbeing of the community and every generation of children.”
Fay Jones added :
"The entire Liberal Democrat campaign in local elections earlier this year was based on halting rural school closures. James Evans MS and I both campaigned against these school closures in Powys and the decision made by the previous Council administration. It’s quite unbelievable that we are now faced with 11th hour proposals to delay Llanbedr Church in Wales closure due to last minute talks between Swansea Diocese and Powys County Council. The threats of school closures have overshadowed our communities for long enough, where have the Council been until now?
Primary schools are the heart of our community in rural areas and it seems there is nothing in place to protect them"
